Potential Hidden Surprises In A Remodel

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Most people love surprises, however in the middle of a home remodel the hidden surprise is less than welcome. Here are some of the most common surprises we see and our input on how serious they really are:

1. Unexpected plumbing issues: when remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, it is important to be aware of any potential plumbing issues that may arise. This could include anything from a clogged drain to a broken pipe. Some of these issues are as simple as moving a pipe or more complicated and involve extensive work.

2. Electrical wiring: if you are planning to install new appliances or fixtures, you may need to rewire the electrical system. This could lead to unexpected costs and delays. We usually see these issues arise in older homes (built before the eighties). A lot of times, electrical issues can be identified before people even start their project to avoid unforeseen expenses.

3. Structural changes: if you are making major changes to the layout of the room, you may need to make structural changes to the walls or flooring. This could include anything from adding support beams to reinforcing the floor joists. These issues can be identified early and incorporated into the scope of work to ensure your project runs smoothly.

4. Unforeseen costs: remodeling a kitchen or bathroom can be expensive. Unexpected costs can arise from the need to purchase additional materials or hire additional labor.

5. Unforeseen delays: remodeling projects can take longer than expected. This could be due to a variety of factors, such as weather delays or the need to order special materials. To avoid supply chain issues we don't begin your project until all of the materials have arrived and are checked in.

In conclusion, no one likes an unwanted surprise during a kitchen or bathroom remodel. However, finding these issues before they become an even bigger headache will save the homeowner a lot of time and money in the long run by fixing them. This really is the silver lining. Hiring an experienced contractor is key to minimizing and avoiding unexpected surprises!
